Shortly after buying our Tesla Model Y Long Range in December 2023, the much faster charging compared to our 2015 Model S made the whole continent feel open to us, at least anywhere with Superchargers within roughly a 200-mile radius. We paired that with the total solar eclipse crossing the eastern United States in April 2024 and drove from Utah to Key West, Florida, and back, crossing the path of totality along the way.

Driving vs charging

What it cost

$818.25Supercharging value (free Supercharging on our car)
$910.93gas car comparison at 25 mpg
$2,530.35our truck towing the RV at 9 mpg
$267.82same miles charged at home at 11¢/kWh (4¢/mile)

Without free Supercharging, the cost would have been about the same as an efficient gas car: a 27 mpg vehicle would have cost $937 and a 32 mpg vehicle $790, at a $3.53 national average for gas. The big savings of electric vehicles come from charging at home most of the time.
